A to Z of HMP Larkhall

A to Z of HMP Larkhall

A

Aberdeen
At her trial for arson, Tina was hoping to receive an extended sentence, but was shocked when the Judge granted her release. Without any friends on the outside, Tina resorted to stalking Hollamby. In a last-ditch attempt to rid herself of Tina, Hollamby decided to buy her a train ticket and pack her off to Aberdeen, home of her fictitious grandmother. However, Tina had other ideas (s8ep7).

Abortion
Zandra went for one after discovering she was carrying her ex-fiancé, Robin’s, baby. As soon as she got to the hospital, she changed her mind and did a runner instead (s1ep4).

Di booked herself in for an abortion when tests revealed the baby she was carrying had been fathered by Tony, Neil’s boyfriend, rather than Neil himself. After the abortion, she continued to feign pregnancy for as long as it took to secure the Wing Governor’s job, and then suffered a ‘miscarriage’ (s5ep15).

Ackroyd, Detective Inspector
DI AckroydPolice officer who investigated Al’s death and the mass poisoning on G-Wing (s6ep7).

Acton
Area in West London. Josh rented a house here from one of his friends. It is assumed that he, Crystal, and baby Zandra still live there.

Adams, Mr
Mr AdamsBarrister who acted on behalf of the prosecution at the Julies’ GBH trial (s4ep13).

Adjudication
After an inmate breaks a rule, they take part in a formal hearing with a governor grade officer in which their punishment is decided.

Adoption
Yvonne planned to cement her relationship with Denny by legally adopting her. However, Internet research revealed that at twenty-one, Denny was too old to be adopted. They decided on an informal arrangement instead (s5ep4).

After hearing that Buki wasn’t allowed contact with her son, Lennox, celebrity Christopher Biggins came to the rescue. He adopted Lennox and then asked Buki to come and live with them as a family after their release (s5ep14).

Horrified when Di started to drop heavy hints about children, Fenner decided to take drastic measures and booked himself in for a vasectomy (s7ep4). However Di quickly shrugged off her disappointment upon hearing of her husband’s sterility and set about making an appointment with the Social Services to enquire about adoption. Blindsided, Fenner had no choice but to muck up the interview (s7ep7).

Affidavit
An affidavit is sworn statement of fact, written down, signed, and witnessed by a taker of oaths (such as a notary public). Karen insisted that Colin swear to the fact that he and Fenner lied in order to get Shell shipped out of Larkhall in an affidavit (s5ep9).

Airlock
The security area between the two sets of front gates at Larkhall. When entering the airlock, all staff and visitors must sign in (or out) with the security staff and may be subject to a search.

Larkhall’s airlock was renovated at the beginning of Series 4 in order to introduce the new exterior build—a prison exterior purpose built for Bad Girls. During the renovation, Larkhall’s POs were instructed to park their cars in the prison yard. Unfortunately for Yvonne, this meant that Karen and Fenner were on hand to prevent her from escaping over the wall (s4ep1 – 2).

Alexander, Gordon
Gordon Alexander The barrister who represented the Crown at Nikki’s appeal against her sentence (s3ep16).

Al Jahani, Emira
Emira Al JahaniEmira was banged up on G-Wing for allegedly withholding information on her husband, suspected terrorist Hassan Al Jahani’s whereabouts. The women on G-Wing were immediately wary of Emira and, after the deaths of Neil Grayling and Ashlee Wilcox, wrongly believed she was attempting to poison everyone with ricin (s8ep1). Emira was later persuaded to give her husband up. After he was taken into police custody, she was allowed to go free (s8ep3).

Al Jahani, Hassan
Hassan Al JahaniSuspected Islamic terrorist who went into hiding after police raided the flat he shared with his wife, Emira (s8ep1). Emira was sent to Larkhall and questioned by the police. Although she consistently maintained her ignorance of her husband’s whereabouts, Emira cracked when the police found traces of explosives in her flat, and was finally persuaded to give Hassan up (s8ep3).

Allen, Frances
A prostitute who was sent to Larkhall for persistent refusal to pay her fines, but in actual fact, was a police detective sent undercover to entrap Natalie. The officer, Detective Inspector Frances Myers went on to become Wing Governor (s6ep1).

‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’
‘Mad’ Tessa Spall’s favourite hymn. She forced Shell to sing it with her several times when they shared a cell on the Muppet Wing (s3ep2).

Crystal, Denny, and Shaz rewrote the hymn’s lyrics as a protest about the horrible conditions in Larkhall for the benefit of a couple of prison inspectors (s4ep12):

“Cockroaches in the bathroom and shit upon the walls,
‘cause God hates all us sinners and puts us in Larkhall.”

‘Amazing Grace’
Disgusted by the black humour evident in the night-calls after Rachel’s suicide, Crystal flung open her cell window and let rip with a soulful rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’. The song was also used to play out the credits at the end of the episode (s1ep4).

Americanas, Hotel
Swanky five-star hotel on the Costa del Sol where escapees Phyl and Bev decided to lay low. Unfortunately for them, newlyweds Sylvia and Malcolm Nicholson were honeymooning in the neighbouring suite (s7ep9).

Amsterdam
When Fenner, Colin, and a group of their PO colleagues decided to embark on a lad’s weekend to Amsterdam, the last thing they expected was to run into Shell in a strip-club. As a result of this encounter, Shell was captured and extradited back to the UK (s5ep1).

Anaphylactic Shock
Or in Renee Williams case, death by peanut! Anaphylactic shock is an extreme allergic reaction that in her case, proved fatal (s2ep11).

Andrews, Vanessa
Vanessa AndrewsLittle girl who was used by a criminal gang to crutch drugs into prisons… including Larkhall. Natalie proved that her evil really did know no bounds when she arranged for Vanessa to visit (s8ep5).

Andy
Andy An inmate in HMP Holdengate’s Vulnerable Prisoners’ Unit who was encountered by Fenner during his brief stint behind bars (s7ep1). Andy was a convicted paedophile who got a kick out of trying to tempt Fenner with photographs of his young victims.

Andy was also the name of inmate Angela Robbins’ aggressive and foul-mouthed other personality. Andy attacked Pat and Lou before Angela was transferred to a secure psychiatric hospital (s8ep3).

Angling Times
Magazine subscribed to and read by Fenner. He brought the magazine into Larkhall for a bit of break-time reading, but neglected to take it out of the envelope it was delivered in. The envelope, labelled with his home address, was pocketed by Dawn and then smuggled to Shell (s1ep10). Shell needed the address to send anonymous letters to Mrs Fenner (s2ep1).

Anonymous Letters
Sent by Shell to Marilyn Fenner (see ‘Angling Times’) (s2ep1 – ep2) and by Shaz, Denny, and the Julies to Barbara’s stepchildren (s3ep4):

Julie J – “Dear Miss Hunt…”
Julie S – “You are a…”

Inspired by Cassie and Roisin’s daring rescue of Neil, Al and Tina came up with a plan of the cunning variety in an attempt to win their own pardon. But in order to save a PO’s life, they needed to place a PO in mortal peril. They chose Di as their target and sent her a series of letters in which they threatened to impale her on a “sharp stick” (s5ep1). After Di rumbled their plot, she co-opted the idea and sent ‘anonymous’ letters to herself and Neil (s5ep5).

Anonymous notes have also been used to tip G-Wing’s POs off to various wrong-doings. Shell forced Rachel to write a letter to the DST which named Nikki as a drug dealer (s2ep2). Notes were slipped under the door of the PO’s office to draw attention to the cannabis Crystal was drying out in the kitchen (s2ep8), and also to name Tanya’s luxury hamper as the source of the oxalic acid that poisoned the wing (s6ep7).

Anonymous Phone Calls
Shell is the chief terror of the telephone lines. So far, her victims have included Hollamby (s2ep2, s3ep16), Marilyn Fenner (s2ep2), and Barbara’s evil stepchildren (s3ep4).

Answer Machine
Poor Nikki. It must be a right pain in the bum when you squander your paltry private spends on a phonecard only to wind up chatting to a loved-one’s answer machine. This occurred a couple of times with Trisha and once, very memorably, with Helen (s2ep12).

Anti-Bible Classes
The death of tragic tot, Baxter Harding saw Crystal going through a severe crisis of faith (s4ep10). Overnight, G-Wing’s Mother Teresa became Christianity’s harshest critic, so much so she decided to start anti-Bible classes. The classes discussed the improbability of events like the feeding of the five thousand, something Tina thought so unbelievable “even Buki couldn’t have thought that one up” (s4ep14).

Appeal
If a prisoner feels their conviction is unjust, or if new evidence is brought to light that could threaten the safety of their conviction, they are permitted to make a request for an appeal. The only G-Wing inmates to have been released after a successful appeal are Monica (s1ep10) and Nikki (s3ep16).

Apple
The fruit used to make the first batch of Chateau Larkhall (s1ep9) (see Chateau Larkhall).

Area
The Prison Service department with the ultimate authority over HMP Larkhall. Amongst other things, Area Management is responsible for the hiring and firing of Governing Governors and the investigation of major incidents.

Armitage, Detective Inspector
Armitage, DI Police detective who led the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Snowball’s suicide (s5ep11).

Arson
Arson is the crime of setting a fire with intent to cause damage. Denny was convicted of arson and sentenced to seven years after she burnt down her children’s home. Arson also became part of the vast array of crimes committed by Shell when she deliberately set fire to Nikki’s cell (s3ep7). Unable to cope with life on the outside, Tina made a successful bid to get sent back to Larkhall by setting fire to a clothes shop (s7ep1).

Artificial Insemination
Julie J tried to get pregnant with the aid of a yoghurt pot, a syringe, and a pervy Babes Behind Bars punter called John. In true Julie style, she dropped the yoghurt pot whilst giving John a hand-job under a table in the visiting room and he quickly cottoned on to what she was doing (s2ep10).

Di bribed Neil’s then boyfriend, Tony, to collect Neil’s sperm for her in a condom (s5ep6). After a couple of sessions with a turkey baster, Di successfully impregnated herself and then managed to con Neil into believing it was the result of a drunken night of passion (s5ep7). It later transpired that the baby wasn’t Neil’s, it was Tony’s. He had (rather disgustingly) mixed his sperm with Neil’s in the mistaken belief that the baby would be fathered by both of them (s5ep10).

After finding out she was pregnant with Donny’s baby, Janine concocted a convoluted explanation for Joy’s benefit. She claimed her fictitious boyfriend, Michael, had left a little ‘present’ (a jam-jar containing his sperm) by her mum’s grave, and that she artificially inseminated herself with it during her outside visit (s8ep9). Unsurprisingly, Joy didn’t believe a word of it.

Art Kit
Brought into Larkhall by Bev, but her box of oils contained gin instead of paint and her brushes concealed knives used to slice lemon (s5ep3).

Art Room
Just across the corridor from the library, this relatively secluded room has been the scene of many a secret tryst. It was used by Helen and Nikki when they needed somewhere private and out of the way (s2ep7), and then by Yvonne and her cronies as a base of operations for Babes Behind Bars (s2ep8). It was also the scene of Shaz’s tragic and untimely death (s4ep16).

Ashmore
After she attacked Fenner, Shell was on the verge of being transferred to this secure psychiatric hospital. Luckily for her, Helen intervened (s3ep2).

Association
A period of time in which the inmates may integrate for recreation.

Asthma Inhaler
Smuggled in to Tanya by yardie gangster, Rick Revoir and then passed on to Darlene. This particular inhaler contained a toe belonging to Darlene’s brother, Terence (s6ep6).

Atkins, Charlie
Charlie AtkinsYvonne’s gangster husband, now deceased. He was shot on the steps of the Crown Court by a hit-man hired by his daughter, Lauren (s3ep6).

Atkins, Lauren
Lauren AtkinsYvonne’s daughter, a real chip off the old block! She ran the Atkins family business after Charlie’s death but eventually fell foul of the law and ended up behind bars (s6ep3).

Atkins, Ritchie
Ritchie AtkinsYvonne’s son, now deceased. He left the country after a row with his father and only returned in order to help his girlfriend, Snowball, break out of Larkhall. After a second escape attempt left him paralysed from the waist down, he entered into a suicide pact with Snowball and overdosed on pills (s5ep7).

Atkins, Yvonne
Yvonne AtkinsEveryone’s favourite gangster’s moll, Yvonne holds the record for the longest stint as G-Wing top-dog (s1ep10 – s5ep16). During her reign, she made a great many enemies, including Fenner. After sussing out Yvonne’s plan to escape through the old hanging cell, he locked her into the bowels of the prison where no-one could hear her scream (s5ep16). Her body was discovered six weeks later (s6ep1).
