Hollamby is back at work and everyone is surprised by her lightening recovery from the ordeal she suffered at the hands of Shell and Denny. However, it does look like she might walk straight out again when she is informed that Helen is the new Governing Governor. But Helen has Hollamby’s measure and makes her Acting Principal Officer in Fenner’s absence, hoping that the extra responsibility will mean that she’s too busy to stir up any trouble. Meanwhile, Charlotte is transferred to an open prison—while Nigerian inmate, Femi, remains at Larkhall, unable to speak English and bewildered by prison life.
G-Wing is stunned by the arrival of the Peckham Boot Gang, who start to make an impression as only they can. Scottish rottweiler, Al McKenzie is hell-bent on making Shaz’s life a living hell, while Maxi’s priority is to evaluate the capabilities of G-Wing’s top-dog, Yvonne. Buki is quickly recruited by the PBG and asked to lure Shaz into the laundry room so that Al can give her a good kicking. Luckily for Shaz, Yvonnne overhears the conversation and arrives in the laundry room first. She viciously beats Al and warns her to stay away from Shaz in the future. Maxi can’t believe it when Al returns, shaken and covered in blood—clearly Yvonne is tougher than she thought.
The girls club together and pool their phonecards so that Femi can call home. The news from Nigeria appears to be bad, but the language barrier prevents them from finding out what the matter is. Later, Femi desperately tries to make another call from the phone in the PO’s office, but Hollamby is using it at the time and summons back-up. In plain view of the rest of the wing, two male POs manhandle Femi off the wing and drag her down to the block. Helen is appalled when she sees the bruises on Femi’s face, but when she manages to find a translator to ask how she was injured, she is told that Femi doesn’t want any trouble; she just wants to see her children.
Nikki confronts Helen about the poor treatment Femi has received, but is told to mind her own business. Crystal and the Julies persuade Nikki to stage a sit-in, but their peaceful protest erupts into violence when a squad of officers arrive in force and with the PBG involved, things quickly get out of hand. Having been informed by Hollamby that Nikki started the riot, Helen arrives on the wing for a confrontation. She refuses to give into Nikki’s demands that she discipline the POs who attacked Femi and provide some proof of her well-being and the stand-off continues. Bored by the stalemate, the PBG relight the fuse by tipping a mug of water over Helen’s head. Helen calls the POs into retreat as the inmates start trashing their cells.
The PBG congregate in Maxi’s cell. Tina and Al congratulate her on a job well done and celebrate the fact that she has managed to increase her profile on the wing. However, Maxi knows that there is one person she’ll have to sort out before she can become top-dog—Yvonne.
