| Labour
Zandra, Crystal, and Janine all went into labour in the four-bed dorm. Although Zandra made it to hospital in time for the delivery of her son, Robbie (s2ep1), Crystal and Janine weren’t so fortunate. Crystal gave birth to her daughter, Zandra, on the floor of the dorm, but at least she had Karen, a PO with midwifery experience on hand to help out (s4ep9). Janine was on lock-down with Phyl, Bev, and Tina when she went into premature labour. When lazy Hollamby refused to answer the cell alarm, Bev had to step in as midwife. Her namesake, Beverley Janine, was rushed into special care and only just survived (s8ep11).
Shell went into labour in the laundry room with only a panicky Fenner in attendance. She was rushed to the MBU where she gave birth to her son, Ronan Beckham Dockley without any complications (s5ep4).
Lady Lags
Fly-on-the-wall documentary that was filmed by independent TV company, Kickin’ Productions. The presence of a film crew caused havoc on G-Wing and gave Fenner an idea of how to get rid of Shell for good (s3ep7).
Larkhall Gospel Tabernacle Choir
Formed by Yvonne in an attempt to persuade G-Wing’s POs to sign her petition against closed visits (s1ep10). The whole idea was to drive the POs, particularly Hollamby, mad with the sound of twelve inmates strumming guitars and singing ‘Kumbayah’ out of tune. Unsurprisingly, the ploy worked.
Larkhall, HMP
The fictional South London prison where Bad Girls are sent to do their time.
Larkhall Rugby Top
This one particular rugby top was worn by a different extra for each of the first three series and was spotted in the background on many an occasion by sharp-eyed fans.
Latoya
One of the residents of the dodgy hostel where Tina was placed after her release. Tina made the mistake of being caught with her hand in the cookie jar, or rather holding a packet of Latoya’s biscuits, and was threatened with a fate worse than death (s8ep7).
Laundry Room
The room was transformed into a more romantic setting by the Julies, Yvonne, and Zandra in preparation for Crystal’s candle-lit first date with Josh (s2ep4). Yvonne beat Al up in spectacular style in the laundry room (s3ep11) and was then nearly strangled to death by a belt wielding Maxi (s4ep9). The laundry room was also the scene of a spectacular Kris eruption when Natalie tried to come onto her (s6ep10).
Shell also used the room as a base of operations for her PO hand-job service during her short-lived business partnership with Fenner. Then Shell went into labour in the laundry room with only a panicky Fenner in attendance. She was rushed to the MBU where she gave birth to her son, Ronan Beckham Dockley without any complications (s5ep4).
The laundry room became one of the places Pat and the Julies used to hide Natalie’s body. They stored it temporarily inside a tumble-drier until Pat stumbled across a disused manhole cover behind a washing machine. Natalie’s decomposing corpse was eventually sent to a watery grave in Larkhall’s sewers (s8ep8).
Leedham, PC
Rather odd and scary looking policeman who pulled Helen over because of
her erratic driving (s3ep1). What the policewoman didn’t know was that
the nurse in Helen’s passenger seat was a convicted murderer called
Nikki Wade.
Ledwell, Detective Inspector
Police detective who was placed in charge of the hunt for fugitive, Kris. Although convinced that Selena had aided Kris’s escape, he allowed her to climb up to the top of the Wellington Arch and make an attempt to talk Kris down (s6ep12).
Left Luggage Locker
Where Darlene hid the bag she stole from yardie gangster, Rick Revoir. Rick kidnapped Darlene’s brother and tortured him until she finally cracked and revealed the bag’s location. However, when he turned up to retrieve the bag, the locker was empty—one of Tanya’s cronies had beaten him to it (s6ep8).
Legionnaire’s Disease
A form of pneumonia that is most often contracted by inhaling mist from water sources such as baths, showers, and cooling towers that are contaminated with Legionella bacteria. Symptoms of the disease include coughing, fever, chills, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and confusion. Although ricin poisoning was originally suspected, Legionnaire’s disease was eventually discovered to be the cause of the epidemic that killed Neil and Ashlee, and left many more fighting for their lives. The source of the bacterium was found to be contaminated water in Larkhall’s air conditioning system (s8ep1).
Lemon Juice
Julie J needed to give a convincing display of grief in order to be given permission to attend her father-in-law’s funeral. After first ordering Julie J to sniff an onion, Julie S finally succeeded in making her cry by squirting lemon juice in her eyes (s2ep3).
Lennox
Buki’s son, abandoned and left for dead in a toilet cubicle in Kings
Cross station. Buki later discovered that Lennox, a wheelchair-bound
CMT sufferer, survived, and that he was living in a London children’s
home under a new name, Winston (s4ep15).
Leroy
An inmate at HMP Holdengate and Fenner’s chief tormentor during his brief stint behind bars (s7ep1).
Lesley
One of Natalie’s cronies on the outside. Natalie arranged for her to attend the funeral of Janine’s mother, wearing a pair of shoes with a false heel crammed full of crack. Natalie then ordered Janine to swap shoes with Lesley at the funeral (s8ep2).
Lester, Buki
When Buki arrived on G-Wing, she was a selfish crack-addict who would sell her own mother down the river for a rock. She was a compulsive liar who wouldn’t think twice about grassing on her fellow inmates. Since discovering that the child she had abandoned for dead was still alive, Buki drastically reassessed her priorities. She was released after completing her sentence and went to live with celebrity Christopher Biggins who had adopted her son, Lennox (s5ep14).
Read Buki’s character profile.
Levi, Mr
The prosecuting barrister at Charlie Atkins’ trial (s3ep5).
Lewis, Caroline
This attractive and confident inmate seemingly appeared out of nowhere during the G-Wing riot (s3ep11). After putting the Peckham Boot Gang in their place, she caught Nikki on the rebound and looked set to become someone to reckon with. Then Maxi discovered that Caroline was doing time for publishing pornographic images of children on the Internet. Caroline was last seen being locked up in a cell for her own protection (s3ep12).
Library
The library was always the haunt of G-Wing’s resident bookworm, Nikki. After her release, it became the scene of the worst tragedy ever to hit Larkhall—Snowball’s bomb (s4ep16). Fenner gave Natalie a job in the library and she used the room to her advantage, namely in order to beat Arun up and to see to Fenner’s ‘personal’ needs (s7ep3). The library was also used by DI Hayes and DS Hook to interview inmates and officers after Fenner’s murder (s7ep11).
Lightfoot, PO
Humungous D-Wing PO with an almost as hugely ironic name. She quelled what could have quite easily become a riot when the D-Wing inmates found out that the canteen was out of shampoo and toothpaste. The shortages had been caused by Cassie and Yvonne’s plot to fiddle Hollamby’s canteen accounts package (s4ep10).
Lilley, Oliver
Posh art gallery owner and old crony of Phyl and Bev’s. He exhibited Denny’s paintings on his gallery’s website and turned her into an artistic prodigy (s5ep15). Oliver also provided Phyl and Bev with passports and money so that they could escape to Spain (s7ep9), and then after their capture, sent them a booze-laden Christmas hamper (s7ep13).
Lindsay, Monica
Otherwise known as “posh bitch”, Monica was a middle-aged and middle-class inmate whose no-nonsense attitude quickly won her the respect and friendship of her fellow inmates. Eventually released after successfully appealing against her conviction (s1ep10), Monica went on to open a halfway house and briefly reappeared in order to provide Julie S with a bed when she was released on an electronic tag (s3ep3).
Read Monica’s character profile.
Lindsay, Spencer
Monica’s Downs Syndrome son. He tragically died during her incarceration (s1ep8).
Linford Securities
The private security firm who were poised to privatise Larkhall until an impromptu hostage-taking situation and other Yvonne-led mischief changed their minds (s5ep7).
Line Dancing
When she was stalking Josh, Di claimed that her weekly line-dancing lessons took place close to his house in Acton. Whether Di actually did take line-dancing lessons we will never know, but on this particular occasion, it was merely a ruse to gain access to Josh’s home (s3ep10).
Hollamby and Mandy attended weekly line-dancing lessons. They took it very seriously, even going as far as dressing up in Stetsons, plaid, and in Mandy’s case, a pair of chaps and a false moustache. Both POs had a shock when they found out that newly-released Tina had just joined their class (s8ep7).
Linen Cupboard
Where Josh and Crystal consummated their ‘marriage’, and where their daughter, Zandra, was conceived (s3ep10).
Lintworth, HMP
Prison where Mandy worked before transferring to Larkhall.
Lipstick
Maxi covered Tina’s face in lipstick to show her who was boss. She was getting increasingly annoyed by Tina’s friendship with Virginia (s3ep15).
Little Dorritt
A serial novel by Charles Dickens about a “terrible prison” called ‘the Marshalsea’. Nikki was reading Little Dorritt just before she and Helen kissed for the first time (s1ep9).
Lloyd, Judge
The Judge who presided over Tina’s arson trial when his colleague, Judge Heathersett, was indisposed. More liberal than hard-liner, Heathersett, Judge Lloyd released Tina on license (s8ep7).
Lo, Dr
The doctor who gave Julie S the all-clear when her tests for cancer came back negative (s6ep9).
Lockdown
In the event of a serious incident on the wing, all inmates are placed on lockdown, i.e. confined to their cells until the Wing Governor deems it safe to release them. Inmates have also been placed on lockdown during a shortage of POs, most notably when Hollamby persuaded all of G-Wing’s officers to call in sick (s3ep3).
Locker Room
Scene of the punch-up between Di and Gina that ultimately led to Gina’s miscarriage (s3ep14).
Locket
Yvonne gave Denny a locket that contained pictures of them both as a way of cementing their unofficial mother-daughter relationship. The gift was Yvonne’s way of making up for the fact that Denny was too old for her to adopt officially (s5ep4).
Locks, Bolts, and Bars
Security procedure followed by the POs in which every lock, bolt, and set of bars is checked.
Longley, Jude
Scumbag tabloid journalist who duped Gina into dishing the dirt on Charlotte Myddleton. She went on to bribe Buki into taking photographs of Charlotte zonked out on drugs (s3pe9).
‘Lord of the Dance’
In order to convince Crystal she’d found God, Shell would join her in hymn singing sessions often with a highly reluctant Denny in tow. The trio sang this particular hymn so loudly Hollamby became convinced they had an ulterior motive—“you’re not digging a tunnel under that bed are you? Using the racket to cover up the noise?” (s1ep9).
Lowry, PC
Police officer who interviewed Karen after she accused Fenner of rape (s4ep10).
Lugasiak, Iga
Iga left her native Poland after being offered a job in London, only to end up being forced into prostitution. Looking for a way to bring Natalie down a peg or two, Spiers conspired with Pat to arrange a meeting between her and Iga. Unaware that she was being taped, Natalie told Iga exactly what she thought of her victims. Later, Pat played the tape for the benefit of the whole wing (s7ep12).
Lucky Bags
One of the many ways Hollamby came up with to fleece the inmates when Neil asked her to take over the running of the new, privatised prison canteen. Hollamby’s lucky bags cost 50p and contained a couple of chocolate biscuits and a handful of toffees… what a swizz! There were ructions when the inmates who had purchased the (not so) lucky bags realised they’d been ripped off (s4ep2).
Lucky Heather
Di grew it in her back garden. She presented Josh with a sprig to bring him luck for the PO’s entrance exam (s3ep5). Fenner was in possession of a sprig of heather when he was released from prison (s7ep1).
Lunchbox
Josh’s day-glo yellow lunchbox. It was used to smuggle four mobile phones to Yvonne for the Babes Behind Bars telephone sex-line (s2ep8).
