G-Wing is in turmoil. Helen hasn’t returned from holiday and Fenner, is in charge. Anticipating a permanent promotion to Wing Governor, he suggests to his wife, Marilyn that they go out for a celebratory meal. Marilyn is in no mood to celebrate, having received an anonymous letter informing her that her husband is having an affair with inmate Shell Dockley.

Hollamby is pleased to hear of Helen’s continuing absence and hopes that this will lead to tougher working practices. She is not so pleased to hear the alarm go off in the four-bed dorm, especially when she discovers that Zandra has gone into labour. Zandra’s boyfriend, Robin joins her for the final stages of delivery, but when complications set in for their new baby son, Zandra has to admit that she is still an addict.

Fenner denies all when Marilyn confronts him about the letters, but he confides in Shell his suspicions that Nikki Wade is responsible. Another shock awaits him when he discovers that Helen has finally returned from her holiday with every intention of continuing in the job. However, Stubberfield brings Helen back down to earth with a bump by informing her that he has appointed a second Principal Officer to help her run G-Wing, an old colleague of his called Karen Betts.

Nikki is delighted to hear that Helen is back and hopes that Helen’s break-up from her boyfriend means that at last, Helen has accepted her burgeoning feelings for her. The news that Fenner is not taking over as Wing Governor does not please Shell. Her antagonistic relationship with Nikki is further fuelled by Helen’s return. But Shell has a plan to seek her revenge on both Nikki and Fenner and arranges for a mobile phone to be smuggled in to her.

Reunited with her baby son, Robbie on the MBU, Zandra is discovering that motherhood isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be and, after an argument with a drug dealer, finds herself in hot water. Robin is called in for an emergency conference by Helen and calmly informs Zandra that he’s already started legal proceedings to gain sole custody of their son. But Zandra has decides that if she can’t have Robbie, nobody can and takes him up to the prison roof. Helen makes a heroic attempt to convince Zandra to hand Robbie over, and Dominic manages to stop her from throwing herself off the roof in despair.

After lock-up, Nikki waits for Helen in the corridor in order to express her admiration. Meanwhile, Shell decides that it’s time she put her phone to use and calls Marilyn Fenner.
