Fenner starts to sweat as a full-scale investigation is launched into the death of Yvonne Atkins. As the police turn up in droves, he’s finding it hard not to crack and tries to deflect suspicion by dropping little hints to Hollamby and Di about just how close Colin was to Yvonne. Already reeling from the news of Yvonne’s death, the inmates are further shaken when Frances Myers introduces herself as their new Wing Governor. Frances makes it clear to the women that she will come down hard on anyone who steps out of line, inmate, or officer.
New inmate Darlene Cake arrives fresh from slashing a girl’s face open with a broken glass. She is taken to the four-bed dorm where her daunting size and loud mouth soon intimidate Al and Tina. However, this doesn’t stop Al trying to steal the stash that Darlene has just de-crutched. Darlene is furious, but Phyl intervenes and persuades her to place her stash into her care.
Kris is certain that Fenner is responsible for Yvonne’s death and it doesn’t take much in the way of persuasion to convince the other inmates. They all turn on Fenner, chanting “killer” and “murderer”. Just when it looks like the situation may turn nasty, Frances orders everyone to be placed on lock-down. It seems that Fenner is number one on everyone’s list of suspects, including the police. Fenner is rattled and orders Colin to keep his mouth shut. But Colin feels he owes it to Yvonne to tell the truth. During his interview, he makes it clear that it was Fenner who attacked him, not Yvonne.
Fenner is called back to speak to the police for a second time. Just when it looks like the game is up, Kris’s keys are discovered, leading the police to believe that Yvonne locked herself into the hanging cell by accident. Colin can’t believe it when he hears the news, and unable to cope with the guilt, he makes his way down to the hanging cell. Meanwhile, as a mark of respect, the Julies decide to place flowers in the spot where Yvonne died. But when Julie J goes down to the hanging cell, she is shocked to find Colin hanging from a noose. She saves him in the nick of time.
Phyl is in trouble when Bev’s gluttony results in an overdose. Frances orders the DST to search the cell, but then realises that the wing is too quiet – where are all the night-calls? She goes from cell to cell and is furious when she discovers that every single inmate is out of it! Although the DST find the hiding place behind the mirror, it is empty. Realising that Phyl has managed to move her stash; Frances places her on cellular confinement until further notice. Meanwhile, Bev is wheeled away bound for the hospital wing.
