A to Z of HMP Larkhall
J
Jammie Dodgers
Biscuits with a raspberry jam filling beloved by generations of British children. They are also Darlene’s particular favourite. She kicked up an awful fuss when Paula confiscated the packet she had brought in to Larkhall with her (s6ep2), and then joined Janan Hamad’s rooftop protest purely because it afforded her the opportunity to scoff her way through Larkhall’s entire Jammie Dodger stockpile (s6ep4).
Janine
The nurse who treated Nikki’s hand after she kebabed herself accidentally with a weeding fork during a row with Helen (s2ep12). Janine’s Australian boyfriend had just been deported and she was working around the clocks to pay their debts before hopefully heading off to join him. Nikki jumped on the chance to bribe Janine, offering her £5,000 to help her escape from Larkhall for the night (s2ep13).
Jealousy
Shell was very protective of her ‘relationship’ with Fenner, so much so that she terrorised Rachel into suicide after becoming aware of their affair (s1ep4). Jealousy is the reason Shell was sent to prison in the first place. She kidnapped, tortured and eventually killed the woman who ‘stole’ her boyfriend.
Nikki was affected by the green eyed monster when Helen went out for a curry after work with Dominic. When he answered Helen’s telephone during a visit to her flat, Nikki went into orbit and their relationship catapulted into meltdown (s2ep12).
Di is Larkhall’s reigning queen of jealousy and very nearly mucked up many a happy relationship. Crystal and Josh eventually wised up to her efforts to split them up (s3ep10), but Mark and Gina weren’t so lucky and Gina subsequently suffered a miscarriage after a locker room scrap with her (s3ep14). Neil thought his marriage of convenience to Di was a great idea until he discovered that she would go to any lengths to stop him seeing other men.
Jellies
Slang term for tranquillisers. see Tranquillisers.
Jenkins, PO
Idiot of a screw who allowed Fenner back into Larkhall when he was quite clearly a gibbering mental wreck hell-bent on causing havoc. Once back on G-Wing, Fenner went straight to Kris’s cell and beat her up before weeing all over her (s6ep4). Jenkins was also duped by Fenner’s plan to manoeuvre Neil into a compromising position with maintenance man Stuart Jones (s6ep9). Finally, he committed the heinous crime of ordering Tina to “piss off” when she knocked on the prison gates in search of Ben (s6ep12).
John
Sad old bloke who became one of Julie J’s regular Babes Behind Bars punters. When Julie J became broody, she and Julie S concocted a plan that involved a visit from John, a hand-job and a yoghurt pot. Although he enjoyed Julie’s ‘attentions’, John cottoned on to her scheme when she dropped the yoghurt pot. The resulting fracas brought about the end of Babes Behind Bars (s2ep10).
Johns, Terri
Red-band who worked on the admin block and who was responsible for the disappearance of the gun that Ritchie smuggled into Larkhall in Karen’s handbag (s4ep16). Terri took the gun from Karen’s desk drawer and then taped it underneath Neil’s desk for safe-keeping. As soon as the coast was clear, she smuggled the gun onto G-Wing and handed it over to Snowball (s5ep1).
Johnston, Julie
Along with her partner-in-crime Julie S, Julie J has become a permanent fixture on G-Wing. She’s usually dismissed as a soft-hearted divvy, although recently, her darker side has come to prominence. She meticulously planned and then executed Fenner’s murder in order to protect Julie S and to avenge Yvonne’s death (s7ep10-ep11). Haunted by the memory of the murder, she experienced a complete mental breakdown and was carted away to a secure psychiatric unit (s7ep12) where she was diagnosed as suffering from bipolar disorder. After treatment, she was cleared to return to Larkhall (s7ep13).

Jolly, Pam ‘Podger’
A notoriously difficult prisoner, Pat spent much of her time at Larkhall dosed up on Lithium and locked inside a cell on the Muppet Wing. To teach Shell a lesson, Hollamby conspired with Muppet Wing PO Betty Wheeler to manipulate Pam into beating her up (s3ep2). Shell crapped herself when Pam was transferred to G-Wing at the instigation of Helen, as did everyone else. Helen arranged for Pam to be visited by psychiatrist Thomas Waugh who diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia. After a successful period of treatment, Pam was transferred to an open prison (s3ep6).
Jones, Stuart
Larkhall maintenance man who was blackmailed by Fenner and Di into entrapping Neil. On their orders, Stuart tempted Neil into the men’s loos and once inside, unzipped his trousers suggestively. A PO – Jenkins – then entered and Stuart immediately accused Neil of trying to molest him (s6ep9).
