Nail
Hidden inside a cloth Di had stolen from Josh’s tool-bag and dropped on the floor of the G-Wing bathroom. Shaz found the nail and after she and Denny used it to tattoo their names on each other’s palms, she pierced Denny’s tongue with it (s3ep5).

Nebeski, Janine
Janine Nebeski Mouthy little madam sent down for five years for credit card fraud. She became Darlene’s sidekick and together they tried to write a novel, testing out one of their plots on Fenner shortly before his death – they fashioned a blowpipe out of a drinking straw and fired a poisoned dart into his neck (s7ep10). After being disowned by her family, Janine lost hope and descended into drug addiction (s8ep3). Donny helped her to pick up the pieces, but was unable to resist his attraction to Janine and they entered into a clandestine relationship that resulted in the birth of a daughter (s8ep11).

Neck-brace
A protective collar worn to support and restrict the movement of the neck after an injury. Hollamby wore a neck-brace after the inmates pushed her down the stairs (s2ep3). She hammed it up big time until Fenner spotted a picture of her and Bobby in a recent ballroom dancing competition in the local newspaper (s2ep6).

Necklace
Worn by Virginia and stolen by Maxi and Al after they drowned her in the bath (s3ep16). Having been framed for the murder, Yvonne was desperate to find a way of unmasking the real killers, so she persuaded Denny to glam herself up and worm her way into Al’s affections. The plan worked like a charm. Not only did Al give Denny the necklace as a gift, she was also caught on tape confessing to her part in the murder (s4ep4).

Newby, HMP
Another fictional London prison. Karen once worked there – only for a short time, but long enough to earn the undying enmity of Mad Tessa Spall. See Spall, Tessa

Nicholson, Malcolm
Malcolm Nicholson Aka Doctor No-No, twice Larkhall’s SMO. He was originally sacked for incompetence after misdiagnosing Pam Jolly (s3ep6), but was later reemployed – probably because nobody else wanted the job (s5ep8). Dr Nicholson married Hollamby shortly after she came into money (s7ep6) and then tried to kill her when she admitted that in marrying him, she had forfeited her inheritance. Luckily for Hollamby, Phyl came to the rescue and shot him dead (s7ep9).

Nightmares
Barbara suffered from terrifying nightmares after the library bomb (s5ep1). Fenner experienced his share of night terrors after leaving Yvonne to die in the hanging cell (s6ep1). Over time, the nightmares increased in frequency, turning into waking hallucinations that eventually drove him completely around the twist (s6ep3).

Nonce
Slang term used to refer to a sex offender, especially those who have abused children.

Novelty Candles
Made by the women after Neil cancelled the shroud-making contract (s7ep2). Determined to avenge Yvonne’s death, Julie S soaked a number of the wicks in poison and then placed the spiked candles around the shrine that had been built to Yvonne in the hanging cell. The toxic fumes were supposed to finish Fenner off, but Julie J got in there first (s7ep10).

Nuns
A number of nuns visited Larkhall during Series 1 – they cared for Spencer Lindsey during Monica’s imprisonment and accompanied him to the prison when he came to visit (s1ep2, ep9). Sister Thomas More caused a stir when she arrived on G-Wing in her habit (s7ep5). Her saintly mask slipped when her evil past was revealed by Pat and she was then transferred out of Larkhall for her own safety (s7ep6).

After planting a bomb in the library, Snowball disguised herself as a nun and planned to leg it during the ensuing panic. She ended up looking like a cross between Benny Hill and Julie Andrews and was eventually caught at the gate by Karen (s4ep16).

Nurse’s Uniform
Imagine you are an ambitious Prison Service professional who has to return their secret girlfriend to prison after a night of passion. You take her nurse’s disguise from her. Do you:

  1. Grind the badge into dust, cut the coat into tiny pieces and disperse them across all of the bins in London?
  2. Throw the badge off Southend Pier and turn the coat into a pair of voluminous trousers?
  3. Keep the coat and badge at work for a few months, even moving it to your new office, despite knowing that you have colleagues who are suspicious of your relationship and would love nothing more than to catch you out by finding outrageously incriminating evidence?

Apparently filed under ‘D’ for ‘Disguise’, the uniform and badge that Nikki wore when escaping from Larkhall (s2p13) were instrumental in forcing Helen’s resignation (s3ep15).
