“The Two Julies survive very well on the inside. No one ever picks on them and they are well liked. They’ve been round the block and back and are very good at fending for themselves – they have their own little world within the prison”.
“The Two Julies are a great team and care about the other inmates. In the prison infrastructure they are left alone and don’t hurt anyone. But they know how to protect themselves - but not by using violence. They know the score and know all the little tricks and cons to make the system work for them. We get the perks and really get away with blue murder! If you want ‘little luxuries’ ask the Two Julies! They won’t get anything dodgy, but if you need a 4 course dinner, a bar of soap or a wedding dress – they’re your girls!”
It is hard for Victoria to separate her character Julie S from her sidekick Julie J (played by Kika Mirylees), even though this series we see Julie S on the outside with her son David (Stephen Webb).
For Victoria getting to be on the ‘outside’, was great. “Even though I had to wear an electronic tag, it was brilliant to be on the outside. Short-lived but great! It was so nice not to be filming in Larkhall! You forget how claustrophobic you are filming in a prison all the time. It was also nice to meet my ‘son’ for the first time, as after all, he is sixteen! Plus, a possible love interest – David’s dad, Trevor (Ian Dunne). That was a great insight for me into Juile’s past, as at one time she did have a lovely fella before her life as a prostitute.”
As to the future for Julie S “She wants a happy ending for herself. She dreams of having a nice life: nice house, nice carpet and enough money to get by. To be with her son and of course, Julie J! But at the end of the day the Two Julies are very institutionalised and I fear that they will always be constant re-offenders.”
