Alicya turns up with her trademark Denny tattoos and hair scraped off her face. She talks about her character Denny Blood with great affection. “She has been all right. She’s been ducking and diving, and she’s a bit insane mixing about with her little friend (Shaz). They are so funny. I really like them two. Quite sweet you know. They are both playful and mischievous – just being young tearaways really.”
In real life Alicya and Lindsey have become good friends – which makes their on-screen mischief work so well.
“Denny has grounded herself a bit more and is having a laugh. But she still doesn’t think before she does things which is certainly going to get her into all sorts of trouble this series – maybe even life-threatening!”
When the word “tattoos” is mentioned Alicya smiles broadly and proudly shows off Denny’s nine – it’ll be ten by the end of series 3! “I always scrub them off every night – and make-up have got very quick at putting them back on again! Once I did keep them on, just to see peoples’ reactions. It’s the barbed wire round my neck which gets the most reaction. People are either really intrigued or scared, and some can’t look but kept surreptitiously glancing at my neck. It really helped me discover Denny, as she must invite those reactions every day. I think her tattoos are to create an instant visual image – for protection so that she’s not hassled.”
Whilst Alicya is waiting to film her next scene, she has taken up an unusual hobby or “therapy” as she calls it – colouring books! With a nice selection of books for age three upwards and her pens, it “calms me down, and gives me something to concentrate on – I know it’s a bit quirky but it’s something I’ve always done! It’s caught on with other cast members now as Lindsey Fawcett (Shaz) has also started creative colouring!”
Alicya’s performance as Denny in Bad Girls has obviously made an impression – she’s been nominated as Best Actress in this year’s EMMAs – the Ethnic & Multicultural Media Awards to be announced in the Spring."
