A to Z of HMP Larkhall

A to Z of HMP Larkhall

I

Ibrahim, Fatima
Fatima IbrahimNigerian inmate who Femi Bada now shares a cell with on E-Wing.

Ice Cube Bags
Before being transferred back to Larkhall from a private psychiatric clinic, Phyl filled a couple of these bags with gin and then concealed them in her hair. She managed to smuggle the gin onto G-Wing where she presented them to an ecstatic Bev (s8ep5).

Ice Dagger
Ice DaggerWeapon chipped out of the side of one of G-Wing’s freezers by Julie J, and then used to fally stab Fenner in the neck. As Fenner bled to death on the floor, the evidence of the murder weapon used to kill him melted away (s7ep10). As a murder weapon, the ice dagger was an example of twisted genius comparable only to the Tales of the Unexpected episode in which a woman clubbed her husband to death with a frozen leg of lamb and then served it up, roasted, to the police officers who investigated his murder.

“I don’t do scared”
This phrase, in response to an attempt at intimidation by Shell, was Yvonne’s defining moment on G-Wing (s1ep10). Not only did it manage to put the fear of God into Shell, it also hailed the beginning of Yvonne’s long reign as G-Wing’s top-dog.

Illiteracy
Jessie Devlin was shocked when she found out that her daughter, Denny, couldn’t read or write (s1ep6). After Jessie’s release, Denny made a heroic effort to conquer her problem by taking adult literacy classes.

“I love you Nikki”
If you’d listened very carefully on the night of Tuesday 4th July 2000, you would have heard the sound of millions of Bad Girls fans celebrating when Helen finally uttered those words (s2ep13)… well, we had all waited for nineteen hours spread over 2 years!

Imam
ImamThe term used for a recognised religious leader or teacher in Islam. Donny arranged for Emira Al Jahani to see an Imam. The conversation was being taped by the police in the hope that Emira would reveal the location of her husband, Hassan, a suspected terrorist. The police’s plan backfired when Emira heard feedback coming from the recording equipment. However, her meeting with the Imam persuaded her to give Hassan up (s8ep3).

Intensive Development Scheme
The Prison Service’s fast-track promotion scheme for promising officers. Frances was so impressed by Selena’s work on G-Wing she recommended her for a place on the scheme (s6ep9).

Inter Library Loan Scheme
Used and abused by Snowball and Ritchie as a method of smuggling the components of their bomb into Larkhall (s4ep15). Also used by one of Natalie’s cronies to smuggle her a map (s7ep9). The map detailed the escape route she should take during her impending outside visit.

Internet
Used extensively by G-Wing’s inmates, both as a way of advertising telephone sex-lines (s2ep4) and as a source of research. Roisin and Cassie managed to hunt down the location of Buki’s son, Lennox, via the Internet (s4ep15), Julie S researched the treatment available for breast cancer (s5ep8), and Yvonne used it to find out that Snowball had starred in several porn movies (s4ep13).

Inter Prison Visit
When a husband and wife, or indeed a common-law/same sex couple are serving time in different prisons, an inter prison visit can be arranged in which one partner is escorted to the other. Yvonne was expecting a visit from her husband, Charlie, but he cancelled at the last minute and sent a message telling her he never wanted to see her again (s2ep13). Shaz and Denny’s visit ended in tragedy when Snowball’s bomb exploded (s4ep16).

Investigations
These could be internal (headed by Area Management), or external (instigated by the police), depending on the seriousness of the incident. Thanks to the number of escapes, suicides, murders, and all-round skulduggery on G-Wing, we’ve seen quite a number of them over the course of eight years.

“It’s over”
The words all Helen and Nikki fans hoped they would never hear. Helen called a halt to their relationship after Shell’s attack on Fenner—“here am I judging Jim Fenner for having an unprofessional relationship with Shell Dockley and look at me” (s3ep1). A great deal of angst followed but eventually, Helen and Nikki did run off into the sunset together… well, they got as far as snogging in a doorway anyway, bless ‘em (s3ep16).

‘I Will Survive’
Originally recorded by Gloria Gaynor, this disco classic is beloved by every drunken female clubber and partygoer in the UK. Everyone on G-Wing joined in with a mass sing-along of ‘I Will Survive’ when they heard that Monica had been released on appeal (s1ep10). Tina gave a solo rendition of the song during the G-Wing Prison Idol competition (s8ep8).
